events of 1066, the most famous date in English history, when the Normans
defeated the English and took control of England. William, Duke of Normandy,
landed with his army at Pevensey in
south-east England and defeated the English under King Harold II at the Battle
of Hastings.
King Harold was killed, and William became King William I of England. By 1070,
the Normans had firm control of the whole country.
